The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) is in the process of developing new “action plans” for species on Florida’s Endangered and Threatened Species list. Last week, as part of this process, a proposed plan for management of the Florida sandhill crane was introduced. The plan calls for the preservation of cattle ranching lands and incentives to manage a habitat for this species. It requests preservation and restoration of wetland habitat, as well as research to better understand the needs of the Florida sandhill crane. The draft plan also calls for specific criteria to be included in conservation easement requirements. The FWC is seeking public input on this and its other draft plans until June 7, 2013.
