What are the top issues currently facing health care providers?

The nation is consumed with the growing proportion of GDP devoted to health care. Decades have been spent attempting to arrest the rapid increase in the cost of health care while maintaining quality and access. I wrote term papers on this subject back in my college days.

Health Care is perhaps the most highly regulated industry in America. The top issues facing health care providers today are Health Care Reform, Fraud and Abuse, Medicare, Quality, and Health Information Technology.

Health Reform is directed at improving the patient experience. It’s been dubbed, “patient-centered healthcare.” The concept is multiple providers delivering coordinated medical services across a continuum of care thereby providing all Americans with a “medical home.” Accountable Care Organizations promoted by the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act signed into law by President Obama in the Spring of 2010 will require transformational changes in how health care is delivered driven by a multitude of economic and quality-of-care factors. Providers will need a hefty investment in the information technology used to support operations.

For the health care provider to be successful, every aspect of operations—financial, clinical and administrative—needs to share information seamlessly, streamline clinical and business transactions throughout the revenue cycle, and facilitate supply chain transactions.
